The Road to Equal Justice Program Intern

PeaceTech Lab works for individuals and communities affected by conflict, using technology, media, and data to accelerate local peacebuilding efforts.

The PeaceTech Lab is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization affiliated with the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) in Washington, DC. The PeaceTech Lab works with activists and partner organizations to accelerate and scale peacebuilding efforts through the use of technology, media, and data. From helping activists in India develop apps to combat gender violence, to organizing a radio drama program in South Sudan that counters hate speech, and using data analytics to assess COVID-19-related violence, the PeaceTech Lab strives to reduce violent conflict and build peaceful communities around the world.  

Programs Internship: The Road to Equal Justice
The Road to Equal Justice (RTEJ) initiative empowers U.S. communities with training and mentoring on media, technology, and data tools that can accelerate and amplify social justice movements. This program has worked with racial and social justice organizations in Baltimore, Denver, Boston, New Orleans, and Miami and has trained 263 people from 150 organizations on how to utilize technology and media in the fight for equal justice. 

Details: This internship will begin in October, 2021 and will continue through December 2021 with the possibility of extension into the Spring contingent upon performance and organizational needs. This is a remote position requiring a commitment of approximately 10-15hrs per week. This is an unpaid, volunteer position which may be done remotely. 

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Programs Intern for The Road to Equal Justice Project (RTEJ) will:
  • Research and identify racial and social justice organizations working in key U.S. cities for the PeaceTech Lab to partner with.
  • Conduct outreach via email and phone calls to potential partner organizations.
  • Provide logistical support for the Road to Equal Justice’s training and mentoring programs.
  • Research social and political dynamics in various U.S. cities to identify key issues and topics to include in the program’s training sessions. 
  • Explore and discover new technological, media, and data analysis tools that can be offered to partner organizations.
  • Identify and conduct outreach to high-profile speakers for RTEJ events. 
  • Build, disseminate, and evaluate surveys for RTEJ participants and partners. 
  • Collect information, photos, stories, and metrics from RTEJ training sessions to craft after-action reports for PeaceTech Lab and its partners. 
  • Support other program development and event management tasks as needed. 
 
Desired Qualifications: 
The ideal candidate will:
  • Be an undergraduate or graduate student studying political science, American studies, history, international relations, social justice, or a similar field.
  • Have a passion for racial and social justice issues in the United States.
  • Have experience in conducting outreach and superb professional communication skills.
  • Have experience working with social justice organizations or on relevant social and racial justice issues. 
  • Have experience in event planning including: compiling schedules and briefing materials, preparing logistics for events and formal meetings, and coordinating live virtual meetings.
  • Have a background or interest in learning more about how technology, data analytics, and media tools can be applied to social justice and peacebuilding efforts.
